Quality Dental Care for Your Children

Using state-of-the-art technology, Accent Dental provides the dental clinic you need for your children, with a total focus on their care and comfort.

Because regular care is a leading factor in keeping your child's mouth free of decay, we suggest your child should visit a dental clinic every six months. We recommend you bring your child in for their first dental check from four years old.

At Accent we offer our younger patients a regular six monthly checkup, including Exam, X-rays, and Clean, along with brushing and prevention advice, which we believe is paramount in inspiring your child to brush properly.

We provide free routine care for teenagers from 13 years old until completion of secondary school.

We are delighted to have a full-time Oral-Therapist (Hygienist) Karen Hobbs who also specialises in (and loves!) treating children.

Keeping your children's teeth healthy

Care of your children's teeth should begin as soon as their baby teeth appear. Many parents think decay in the early years isn't a problem, mostly because baby teeth fall out and are replaced by permanent teeth. But research has clearly shown children who develop early cavities go on to have higher rates of decay in permanent teeth.

For this reason, outside of visiting the dental clinic it's super important to ensure your kids brush twice a day - before bed and in the morning.

Bedtime is the most important time to brush. A smear of toothpaste is all that is required. Have them spit out the toothpaste but not rinse with water. Leave the rest of the toothpaste so the fluoride can keep working to protect the teeth.

Taking Care of Your Children

Our team of dentists is led by NZ dentist Dr. Matt Sumner. Dr. Matt is a founding member of the NZ Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (NZACD) and has been practising for over 25 years - he's also an Auckland local. We provide free routine care for teenagers from 13 years old until completion of secondary school.  We look forward to seeing you and your family member in the practice soon.

Diet

Restrict sweet drinks and foods. Fruit juice and fizzy drinks contain a lot of sugar and are high in acidity, which increases the susceptibility of the enamel to decay. The more frequently a child snacks, the greater the chance for tooth decay - thus a short sweet feast is better than slowly sipping a bottle of juice or working through a handful of lollies throughout the day.

Night-time snacks are particularly damaging because the saliva flow, which helps clean the teeth, reduces significantly at night. That's why night-time brushing is so important.

Fluoride

The three main protective effects of fluoride are:

  • Fluoride makes teeth more resistant to decay by strengthening tooth surface
  • Fluoride interferes with the growth of bacteria which cause cavities
  • Fluoride helps repair the early stages of tooth decay

At Accent, we welcome our younger patients, offering them the level of care and comfort that will help them want to go to the dentist! So if you need a dental clinic in Auckland for your children, make sure you call us first. You can be sure we will take care of your little ones.

Dental Sealants

Dental Sealants (or tooth sealants), provide further protection against tooth decay. They are typically applied to your children's permanent teeth, which emerge when a child is between 5 - 14 years old.

By coating the teeth with a protective sealant, it significantly reduces any likelihood of tooth decay. Long-term it may also reduce any extensive treatment required as an adult.

Teeth sealants can be applied in a single treatment.
